One of my favourite things about trying a new skin isn’t actually wearing it. It’s seeing how far I can take it. I always start with the creator’s vision, exactly as it comes, because I want to appreciate the work before I inevitably start meddling. After that, all bets are off. A little contour finds its way onto my face, then perhaps a different lipstick, a touch of blush, another eyeshadow. Before long I’ve built something completely different, yet somehow it still feels like the same person looking back at me.

Nar Mattaru‘s new Fox skin, now available at Midnight Order, turned out to be the perfect excuse to indulge in exactly that process. Before I even unpacked my makeup folders, one thing immediately caught my attention. Nar Mattaru has changed the way their skins are sold. Instead of including eyebrows by default, matching brow packs are now available separately for a very reasonable price. I have to admit I quite like that idea. Between events, gachas and shopping over the years, I’ve accumulated enough eyebrow packs to last several lifetimes, however, i quite like the delicate Fox eyebrows, so I went and bought them too! Keeping the skin itself at L$699 makes the whole package surprisingly affordable as well.

For the first look, I showed an unusual amount of restraint. Fox is almost entirely untouched, apart from the matching Fox brows. I’m wearing LeLutka‘s Avalon head with Velvet Vue’s Meli eyes, while Opulein‘s Blossom hairbase and bun keep everything neat and uncomplicated. The Delilah dress from Just Because felt like the obvious choice because it is so simple yet elegant. Nothing is trying to steal the spotlight, allowing the skin to do exactly what it was designed to do.

What immediately appealed to me is that Fox already has enough character on its own. The lips are softly defined without looking overdrawn, the shading around the nose and cheeks feels natural, and there is just enough structure in the face that it doesn’t disappear under soft lighting. It’s the sort of skin that doesn’t need rescuing with makeup, which, ironically, makes me want to experiment with it even more.

That experiment began, as it usually does for me, underneath the eyes. I know eyebags divide opinion, but I genuinely love what they bring to a face. Perfect skin can sometimes look a little sterile, whereas a hint of softness beneath the eyes immediately adds warmth and personality. I started with Avarosa‘s Avana eyebags before layering Warpaint‘s Flor version on top. From there I reached for the contour included in the Fox Skin Specials and paired it with the subtle blush that comes with the package. None of it shouts for attention, but together those small additions quietly reshape the face.

The eyes came next, and this is where layering really starts to become addictive. I used the kohl liner from Warpaint‘s Flor set as a base before adding Fontaine‘s Endless eyeshadow and finishing everything with Goreglam‘s Angel. The combination creates a warm reddish brown that deepens the eyes without becoming too dramatic, while also giving the illusion of a fuller lash line. My lashes are Pleasure by Midori, and they fit the look beautifully. For my lips I reached for Midori‘s Eternal Crush, reducing the opacity just enough to allow Fox’s own lip colour to remain visible underneath. The result is glossy without feeling heavy, exactly the balance I was hoping for.

Once I’d reached that point, changing the styling almost felt inevitable. The sleek bun made way for About Love‘s wonderfully sculpted Enigmatic hairstyle, although I continued wearing Opulein‘s hairbase because it blends so beautifully around the hairline. I also swapped my Delilah dress for Just Because‘s Lorna, adding Casadel‘s Judy belt to define the waist a little more. The Kiwi Co.‘s Sunset Luxe wedges completed the outfit, while Yummy‘s Petit Perle jewellery and the Amelia and Hannah rings from Piece of Me added just enough sparkle without competing with the face.

What I enjoyed most while putting this together was discovering that Fox never lost its identity. Some skins are lovely until you begin layering cosmetics, after which every face starts looking strangely alike. Fox never crossed that line. Every product I added still allowed the skin itself to shine through, and that is probably the nicest compliment I can give it. Whether you prefer to wear it completely fresh or, like me, can’t resist opening another makeup folder, Fox remains recognisably Fox. That versatility is exactly what makes it such a satisfying skin to work with.
